Sanctuary Cap Cana hosts David Ortiz Celebrity Classic

The first annual David Ortiz Celebrity golf classic was held December 4th-7th, 2008 at the Sanctuary Cap Cana golf and spa resort. The tournament was played at the Punta Espada golf club.

The Boston Red Sox slugger’s charity event hosted some of the biggest names in sports including teammates Tim Wakefield, Justin Masterson, Jed Lowrie, Julio Lugo, and Manager Terry Francona. Other MLB stars involed were Alex Rodriguez, Pedro Martinez, Mariano Rivera, Miguel Cabrera, Vladimir Guerrero, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins and Hanley Ramirez. Also teeing up were sports legends Bobby Orr, John Havlicek, Luis Tiant, and Jim Rice.

The Celebrity Classic is a fund raising event supporting the David Ortiz Children’s Fund to provide help to children in need of medical care in the Dominican Republic and New England, especially children needing heart surgery. The successful event raised $300,000 through attendees, corporate sponsor donations and auctions.

David Ortiz is a native Dominican and in June 2008 was recognized by UNICEF and given the Children’s Champions Award, the first time that a sports figure has been awarded this
prestigious humanitarian award.
